Aquarium with shark bridge9/20/2023 ![]() ![]() Everybody takes the same photograph, the shark swimming directly overhead, it’s fun to watch. Where the other fish and turtles seem mildly amused by our presence the sharks just give us that cold, dead stare as they glide by. The Jellyfish Gallery is pretty cool, more than 100 jellyfish from around the world capture our attention with their unique shape, the way they move inside cleverly lit tanks. Then there’s everybody’s favorite, the penguins! Penguin Palooza is home to 5 species of cold-weather penguins, they’re so much fun to watch. Newport Aquarium now offers a walk along the top edge of the shark tank, the shark tank overlook. Here you can view 2 dozen sharks, 4 exotic shark rays, 2 sting rays, and more than 300 fish. If you are so inclined you can even cross the “shark bridge”, a 75-foot long v-shaped rope bridge strung across the tank.We try and get to the aquarium every couple of years, there’s always something new, and we’re never disappointed. Outside the rain has let up, we make our way to the Newport On The Levee Riverwalk and take in the view. Here we overlook the mighty Ohio, after days of rain the water level is high, multiple bridges criss-cross the waterway, to the right Mt Adams rises above downtown Cincy, skyscrapers dot the skyline. Perfect $200+ for our case, but might not be for others.Next we leave the city of Newport, cross the Licking River and arrive in Covington KY. getting on and off the freeway is easy and no traffic. Then we just go there for a few hours before going home for a nap. free parking, no reservation requirement, free guest pass so dad can join on the days he feels like walking. We get the highest level membership just for one adult and one kid ( plus a preschooler free annual pass, great promotional program). For the regular day entry price, it's definitely not worth it, but wait, there is a reason for it, so it won't be crowded by whoever just wants to pop in! If you have little kids 10 year and younger, that's the right amount of things to take in for a couple of hours' trip, anything longer would be too much anyway. The exhibit itself is acceptable in terms of a middle-of-the-land aquarium, it gets the job done. Hates hot/humid/rainy or cold weather but still want nature stuff. ![]() have small kids you have to entertain on weekends, 4. willing to spare a couple hundred of bucks. However, in some sense, it's also perfect if you are 1. I give this 5 stars not necessarily for the aquarium itself, since it does have a lot to be desired simply due to it's location and surroundings (not next to real ocean, run-down part of the town etc.) And it's unreasonably pricy (or for a reason) for the exhibit you get. It was not worth the price I paid and the almost three hour drive home! I was really disappointed this time around. I used to love this place and always recommended it to others. I ended up having to pay $32.99 for my adult tickets and the child ticket price rose too. Why?!! I didn't want to buy the tickets until the morning we were going, because with kids, you just never know if they will wake up sick. The date we were going, the original price was $29.99 for adults. ![]() I also didn't like that the prices change based on the date, and even on a single date, the prices changed. They tell you that you should reserve tickets online and then charged me almost $8.00 in extra fees. You can feed and touch stingrays, which was wonderful, but the other 'touch exhibits' were really lacking. A staff member finally arrived and told me that they would be closed for another 15 minutes. We stayed in the area for about 25 minutes. One of them had a sign that said 'closed for 15 minutes'. I had told my child about all the cool things she would be able to touch, but we were very disappointed. One of them was closed for the day, due to staff shortages, and another one had only two items in it. They will tell you to visit their their other 'touch exhibits' instead. First of all, the 'touch a shark' tank is very deep, so small children won't be able to reach down far enough to touch the sharks. They advertise all of the 'touch tanks' that they have for children, but they have changed them. I have visited this aquarium several times in the past with my children, but hadn't been there for a few years. ![]()
